Appeal withdrawn for renewable energy centre in Sunderland

August 17 2020

Plans for a renewable energy plant at Hilthorn Industrial Park have been formally withdrawn by the developer Rolton Kilbride Limited (RKL). Following dialogue with Sunderland City Council, Rolton Kilbride was instructed to withdraw the appeal request, after a new regeneration scheme was brokered instead with the local authority.

The latest plans for the site at Hilthorn Industrial Park will be part of a larger suite of development, which will be announced by Sunderland City Council tomorrow (Tuesday August 18th). RKL has also completed the first phase of a feasibility study into an energy scheme which will feed into the proposals.

Andrew Needham, Managing Director of Rolton Kilbride said: “We have a strong track record of working closely with local councils and communities to design schemes which are sustainable, enable long term job creation. Throughout the application process, we have engaged positively with both Sunderland City Council and local stakeholders, working to adapt and respond to their views on our proposals. We understand that alternative proposals for the site are now in play and have withdrawn the appeal on that basis, albeit that renewable energy continues to be vital for Nissan.”
